MUSIC
Music provides the vibrancy to ICON, and since its inception ICON has showcased music with entertainment of another level. It has been the platform where artists not only showcase their existing musical talents but are encouraged to exercise creativity that is locked within or unseen. ICON has propelled many unsigned music artists into their musical endeavours and we continue to open our doors for all artists to establish their careers and allow their music to be heard. FASHION
ICON Fashion is a platform provided for those who have creative flair and passion for all facets of the fashion platform, including clothing, hair, makeup and wearable art to accessories. ICON Fashion aims to give designers a place where there are no limitations in their creative expression as designers. Fashion today seems to be recycling itself over and over again but ICON is a place where fresh, unique and new styles can be birthed and showcased in a way never seen before. ICON Fashion has featured local designers from Brisbane such as ATHAN-JON who is renowned for his combined work of clothes, makeup and hair within the industry. He has also styled for music artists such as Katie Noonan and Butterfly effect. SUGOI (Emerging artist from the Sunshine Coast) and well established designer NELSON MOLLOY (Mercedes Benz 2006) have also featured at ICON. National and international designers are recognised at ICON for their own signature designs. ICON is an opportunity for emerging designers.
DANCE
The Dance Scene at ICON is an art form where we push dancers and dance crews to have a limitless border of creativity. We encourage dancers to pioneer new things in dance that no one has tried before and their expression dance should be at the highest caliber of performance. We’re looking for a new movement in dance. There is no standard of what dance should look like when you express it and we look for dancers who express dance as if he or she was the person who invented dance as an art form because there is no box or past perceptions of dance limiting them in their expression. We encourage dancers to be a part of a creative movement or journey in ICON that will tap into new things and recreate dance as it is known.
PERFORMING ARTS
ICON’s Performing Arts is an igniting point for actors & play-wrights to showcase their craft and push beyond the norm. Shakespeare was renowned for being ahead of his time and the greatest in history and now ICON Performing Arts deliver a platform where its actors and playwrights are propelled to create ‘ahead of our time. ICON Creative Summit is hosted by Breakthrough Community International, an incorporated not for profit organisation. ICON seeks to support emerging artists by providing this performance platform, as such we do not pay artists for their performances.
VISUAL ARTS
You've been to Art Galleries to observe opulent master pieces, you captured the virgin light of the sun with your Pentax 35mm SLR Camera, watched the greatest film known to man, marvelled & wondered how the Stone henge were sculptured. ICON 08 is the inaugural launching of the Visual Arts platform. All of the above sectors of Visual arts are powerful, unique & creative in their own way. But imagine being apart of a Visual Arts gallery that will take you through a journey that will integrate all sectors of Visual Arts as one spectrum. An art gallery that goes beyond square canvasses hung high on the wall; where sculptures & paintings will take you back to your early childhood memories accompanied by digital media that will propel you into the future. This is only the beginning of ICON 08 Visual Arts. Are you a part of the prism journey?
SHORT FILM
ICON 2008 will be including it’s first ever Short Film festival as part of the new performing-arts night at Brisbane’s Powerhouse Theatre, ICON is providing the opportunity for all budding filmmakers to exhibit their distinct creative styles within the industry and community. ICON will be excepting short films both from across Australia and Internationally. All genres are welcomes: Documentary, Narrative, Experimental, Comedy, Drama, Animation, Music Video etc. *(We believe that there is a medium for every story that needs to be told, but if you can’t find one that will give justice to your message then create one that will.) If you have worked on a short film or have a story you believe the world should see, then this is the opportunity for you. There are no restrictions on content except that it must be appropriate for an all-ages audience and that there is a 15 minute time restraint.
SPOKEN WORD
ICON presents a platform for a new form of expression in the form of Spoken word. With its blend of hip-hop stylistics, political empowerment and creative freedom spoken word has become a voice for youth and those typically seen as voiceless. Spoken word, at its simplest, is nothing more than the oral tradition of poetry. Across the world poets step up to microphones to speak memorized verses of personal truths and the scene has become the nexus of art, activism and culture for an entire generation. ICON provides the opportunity for poets to come and express themselves in this new powerful medium that exhibits unseen creativity, lyrical skill that expresses strong subject matter that engages the crowd and leaves listeners provoked, moved and changed.
DJ’ING
The DJ Scene at ICON is one of the biggest electronic specticles in the lineup, boasting some of the worlds best up and coming DJ's performing freestyle tricks and scratches, showing just what future music is all about.
